How to Sync Music from Your Android Tablet to Your Phone
Maybe you ripped your CDs on a tablet, or that’s just where your library lives. Either way, you want some of it on your phone for the commute, the gym, or the car. The usual answer is a computer, a cable, and a lot of dragging folders around.
There’s a simpler way. You can sync music straight from your Android tablet to your phone over a single USB-C cable, with no computer in between.
What You Need
- An Android tablet with your music library
- An Android phone to copy music onto
- A USB-C to USB-C cable (the one that came with either device usually works)
- Discs installed on the tablet (free on the Play Store)
You only need Discs on the tablet, the device doing the syncing. The phone just needs to accept the connection. That said, it’s worth installing Discs on the phone too: you get the same clean, beautiful player on both devices, and the albums you sync over are ready to play right away.
Step 1: Put Your Phone in File Transfer Mode
When you connect two Android devices, one acts as the host and the other shows up as a device to copy to. Here, the tablet is the host and the phone is the device.
Connect the two with the USB-C cable, then on the phone, tap the USB notification (it usually says “Charging this device via USB”) and choose File transfer (sometimes labeled MTP). That’s what lets the tablet see the phone’s storage.
Step 2: Open Discs on the Tablet and Grant Access
Open Discs on the tablet. Android will ask for permission to access the connected phone. Tap allow, and confirm you’d like to use it as a media player. Discs remembers this, so you only do it once per device.
Step 3: Drag the Music You Want
The phone now appears alongside your library. Drag albums or artists from your tablet’s library onto the phone, or use the Send to option from any album or artist menu. Discs copies the files with their tags and album art intact and organizes them properly on the phone, so they show up correctly in whatever player you use.
It works in both directions, too. Want to pull a few albums off the phone and into the tablet’s library? Drag them the other way.

This isn’t just a tablet-to-phone trick. The same flow moves music phone to phone, or from a Chromebook to a phone. Whichever device you run Discs on is the one doing the syncing; the other just needs file transfer enabled when it connects. It all happens directly between your devices over the cable.
